NEWS & NOTES
Welcome to Salal Books! We have been selling books by mail order for years and this
new domain gives you the flexibility to accumulate
materials from a single source and have them bulk shipped at a more
attractive price.
For the next while, we will be
engaged in the process of increasing the listings of our hard-cover stock. We have been busy over the winter moving and updating our stock from ABEbooks to this new site. Now we will be posting new items that we have not listed before on the web. We have almost finished with our hardcover fiction and are now beginning to list the biographies and history and arts. Next will come the sciences and social sciences and so forth. There will eventually be about 3,000
items to browse. Please forgive us if our listings appear somewhat haphazard
in the meantime. We will catch up with detailed descriptions of each item as
time allows. Happy browsing...

Contract Editorial Services: Your
host on this site, Dan Fivehouse, has spent most of his work career freelancing
in communications: writing, editing, publishing, filmmaking, photography, etc.
I still maintain that skill set doing contract work. For an example of my work,
see any of the books authored by my wife, Sandra Susan Friedman. My past
editorial work includes fiction, biography, industrial history, technical and
explanatory texts, topics in the natural sciences and social sciences—pretty
much anything with the exception of politics and religion.
I usually charge on a project-basis for book editing and story-doctoring
using a formula of roughly $50/hour depending upon the complexity
of the work and so forth. My charge for a read-through with structural
suggestions is usually a lesser fee billed on a per-page basis. My favored document
platform is Microsoft Word for PC, but I can accomodate Quark or Acrobat as
required. I am also conversant with some of the various ebook conversion
systems. If you have a project in mind and would like to discuss it with me,
you can phone or email me at dan@salalbooks.com

Antique Store For Sale: Retrotique, a store selling classic furnishings, ornaments, objets d'art, country crafts and fine antiques in the village of Sechelt, BC, Canada (pop: 9,000). After many years of providing designers and decorators and local residents with a unique and eclectic selection of high quality pieces, the owner must leave the business for health reasons. Sale price is negotiable. Even in lean economic times, the shop represents a stable hobby business for a knowledgeable retired person or couple. The lease on the premises can be renewed in the summer of 2010. The owner is also willing to consider the sale of contents only.
Contact the owner directly: Phyllis Gunther 604-885-4242.
Location: The shop is located on Trail Avenue in the centre of Sechelt—gateway to the resort areas of the Sunshine Coast (total resident pop: 28,000) along the eastern shore of British Columbia's great Salish Sea. This is an area with high foot traffic. The shop is bordered on one side by Ashley's, the village's primary source for used books and recordings, and on the other by Tailwind Books, the source for new books and paper goods and by Pastimes toy store. Directly across the street is Trail Bay Centre, the town's main shopping mall with abundant parking. At the north end of the block is Cowrie Street, the town's main commercial street and at the south end of the block is the Sunshine Coast Highway.
Transportation: a 15-minute flight from Vancouver, British Columbia, Canada or a more leisurely journey using traditional means—a 20-minute drive from the city centre to the ferry terminal at Horseshoe Bay in West Vancouver, a 40-minute voyage on the ferry to Langdale—threading its way past the islands scattered throughout Howe Sound, and a further 20-minute drive along the Sunshine Coast Highway to Sechelt.
